Art Instruction in the Comfort of Your Own Home

In Caroline Jasper's "Landscape Oil Painting on Red Ground" she answers the question "Why paint on red?" in demonstrative fashion. Working from a photograph and value study, Jasper begins each landscape in an organized and systematic way. Jasper tells the viewer that she chooses red as a ground because of its "emotional and visual impact... With the canvas already colored, there s no need to cover every centimeter of it. Colors are less likely to become muddied by mixing as they touch. The color ground, allowed to consistently show through between painted brush marks, gives an overall sense of unity to the finished painting."

Jasper begins the landscape in this DVD by establishing strong values with white, a fast drying color, before branching out to darker hues. Her color palette is well organized and her mixing techniques come across very clear and sensible. The viewer is also treated to much practical art theory in the DVD's eight chapters: Adding Darks; Color and Visual Interaction; Toning Down the Color; Improving Contrasts; Finishing and Glazing Techniques.

All in all, Jasper's approach to oil painting can easily be adapted to other opaque media. Her relaxed teaching style is refreshing and her step-by-step painting demonstration is sure to invite the adventurous student to participate in his or her own artistic journey.
