COLOR CORNER
Mud happens!
But why?
That question hangs over many a palette when artists are trying to figure out what to mix with what. When a color mixture is undesirable, all too often another color is added, then another, and the mixture turns muddier with each addition. That's why "overworked" paintings tend to be muddy... too many different colors added in one place. Remember that any two colors mixed produce a color less vibrant than either parent color unmixed. Some brilliance is lost in every mixture; less if colors are similar to begin with. Colors can corrupt each other, more so if their hues conflict (not color wheel close), and especially when three or more colors become involved. Simple mixtures of just two colors are less likely to look muddy. Don't confuse "dull" with "dirty". Lovely gray tones can result from combinations of nearly opposite colors. |
| Caroline's books and DVDs contain many references, demos, and exercises pertaining to the importance of recognizing color bias when choosing colors to mix. |

Artist Caroline Jasper presents a four hour interactive water-themed oil painting demonstration at Collectors' Gallery & Framery. This will be an evening of art, live entertainment, food and wine, free and open to the public.
During the event attendees will witness Jasper’s innovative color ground technique in which she begins on a hot-red canvas. “I like to always start with recording sunlight when I’m painting. Working on color ground allows me to paint light first. On white canvas the light wouldn’t show up until the end, so I have evolved in my work to painting on color ground. Using red as the ground color helps to portray a sense of action and movement in the water,” explains Jasper. The artist will show how to capture the natural hue reflection and texture of water and conjure the illusion of motion. In addition, the proper use of artist materials, including brushes, paints, mediums, color theory and reference photos will be discussed.
Those attending are welcome to ask questions and make comments throughout the demonstration. A backdrop
of additional paintings will be for sale, including small sized prints and framed originals. |
