Ralph White: "It was a pleasure being able to take another series of classes from you at the expo. Using your teaching I have gone from being strictly an abstract painter using acrylics to being able to create a painting from a picture using oils. That is a distance of at least 500 miles in learning. You are a great teacher." |

Cherrie Saxton: "Thank you for an absolutely amazing experience! You are awesome to paint with and you are an amazing teacher. Both classes I took were the best. I thank you for sharing your knowledge with me. I paint wine bottles and glasses all the time but you opened a new part of my brain! I enjoyed everything, your wonderful dry humor, how you kept us on schedule...it was easy to grasp what you were teaching. I did not want the classes to end. I feel so free to paint. It was great fun and an honor to take your classes. Thank you again." |

Viv Stone: "I had so much fun in your class and came home and painted my two scenes over again, on larger canvas. I'm not finished, but just reading your books and re-doing the paintings has been such a great exercise. I work full time, and can't wait 'till Monday (my day off) to get back in my art room and work on them some more. I'm also going to be on the lookout for any other classes you might do in California, because I will be there! So appreciate your great teaching and help!" |

COLOR CORNER
Color vs. Value:Color attracts your eye and prompts emotional response. It can also aide in identifying subject, interpreting image, and imparting an overall message or mood. However, while color is holding court at the party, value does all the heavy work. Value is the essential factor in delivering the image. Value, more than color, imparts spatial depth illusion and three dimensional form. Differences in light and shadow (value contrast) define surface contours and imply volume. Our brains rely on dark and light differences in visual data collected by our eyes in order to make sense of what is being seen. We see value first, color second. We are not confused by the absence of color in black and white photos or the waning visibility of colors as each sunlight daily fades to darkness. Value stays on the job. In every painting's delicious recipe, value is cake itself. As for color, it's just the icing on top. Here's a tip for improving your skills in seeing value differences: Take a digital camera view of both subject (life view or photo) an your painting. Compare views. Accurate value representation is more important than making colors in the painting match the reference. If the painting is dark where it needs to be and light where it needs to be, it will carry the image visually. It matters less which colors were used.
-------------------------------- Caroline's books and DVDs contain numerous references, demonstrations, and exercises pertaining to the importance of value in painting. |
