"This project was a fulfilling experience. I got to both complete a painting and give in-depth explanations as I worked. I never get to do that in a workshop because emphasis is totally on personal instruction with limited time for demos. Many thanks to Jim Jernigan at Artist Palette Productions and Cheap Joe's for publishing this DVD." - Caroline |

JUNE 2010 • 4 days • ART EDUCATORS' RETREAT •STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE UNIVERSITY • Nacogdoches, TX
"These are my people. It was good to be back among them after years away from teaching high school art. I commend SFASU School of Art's Dr. Marsha Blount for creating this worthwhile annual event. Teachers make great students. I had a class of forty 'ringers'. What a treat!" - Caroline |
| www.art.sfasu.edu.htm |
Paula Hand: "I always think it is interesting how an experience like the art retreat moves one forward. I've been painting every day. The 'Powercolor' book is a great reference. I must tell you that the most amazing lesson I learned was to 'see the light'. I set up an all white still life... I see the light. Even though the process of maintaining light in watercolors is different from oils, I still can use all the color ideas you taught us about recording the world." |

Paula Rozell: "I thoroughly enjoyed the week. You shared your knowledge so generously. I learned so much. I learned not only about colors but so much about value that I had never thought before. I can photograph my palette and see which colors have the darkest values. That is awesome. How you showed us to make the background recede was cool too. You are an awesome artist and teacher."

Gail Meadows: "I am one of the ones without much painting experience (one class almost 30 years ago). I enjoyed your teaching so much; love using red gesso and leaving bits showing. One of my art friends and I discussed your techniques, including how you photograph in B&W to make sure the value study is pleasing, and the exercise of placing colors in order by value, etc. I tried to think about it the entire time I painted. It makes me want to paint about four times more quickly so I can get the hang of it before I lose what you talked about. I look forward to having time to read the color book. Thank you."

Suzi Ickles: "Thank you for presenting at the SFA Art Educators' Retreat. I loved getting back into oil painting after almost 40 years. I brought home three paintings that I am so proud of! I learned so much about color and value and contrast that makes so much sense, and that I had not heard explained the way you did. I have already read a lot in the 'Powercolor' book and am glad I have time this summer to really read and think about it and paint some more. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and techniques with us. I hope to see and hear you again in the future."

AUGUST 2010 • 5 days •CLOUDCROFT ART WORKSHOPS• Cloudcroft, NM
We had a small yet mighty group of serious artists and the bonus - a great mix of people. It was a joy to work with one and all! Cloudcroft is now on my list of favorite places. I look forward to returning in 2012." - Caroline |

Susan Finch: "I sure enjoyed your class. It was the best workshop I have ever taken. You are a great teacher as well as a great artist. Your years of teaching experience makes a big difference and I really appreciate that you did not have the 'my way or the highway' attitude. Seems most teachers do and it makes me feel rebellious. I just finished my first landscape painting using my newly learned techniques. Thanks again and it was a pleasure meeting you."

COLOR CORNER
Colors change from palette to painting. Not literally, they just seem to change. It's all about context. A color appears to get darker when painted next to a lighter value color, lighter next to a darker one (compared to how it may look on your palette). Color complements appear brighter together than when either is placed next to an analogous, similar color (as often arranged on palette). Such color surprises between in-the-tube and on canvas appearance take some getting used to. Even so, one can merely predict how colors will interact once they become part of a painting. Therein lies a source of the ongoing excitement of painting. |
