CAROLINE'S COLOR TIP: Using BLACK...
Opinions Differ

Love it or hate it. Some artists swear by black paint. Others never use it; I am one of them. Black is poison on the palette (my opinion). Black seems to take the very life out of any color it's mixed with. Nothing we see is totally without light and therefore not without at least a hint of color. In representing the darkest, black-like values, I go for the darkest colors available on my palette. Ultramarine Blue, Ultramarine Blue Deep, Alizarin Crimson, and Permanent Violet are my standards, mixed in various combinations, sometimes with Viridian or Sap Green. Adding black to darken a color makes a false-looking product. Instead, I suggest choosing a dark-valued color to start with. If further darkening is needed, add a darker color whose hue suits the situation.
COLOR CORNER

BLACK is elegant yet evil, suggesting formality, death, strength, and power. Not really a color, black (as if one could find total blackness) absorbs all light, reflects none, and is therefore colorless. In theory, all colors mix to make black... if only real paint pigments performed according to wheel theory.
